Springtime is here and that means it’s time to get outside and enjoy the nice weather on your favorite powersport vehicles. Whether you’re hitting the trail, playing the links, or just enjoying the great outdoors, the last thing you want to worry about is whether your insurance policy has you protected.
Motorcycles and Motorbikes
On-road motorcycle and motorbike insurance coverages are similar to your auto coverage. Motorcycle insurance provides financial protection in the event of a motorcycle accident, loss, theft or damage. This includes liability coverage in case you are responsible for another person’s injuries or property damage. This coverage can be applied to all types of motorcycles — street bikes, choppers, scooters, mopeds, and even Segways.
Off-road motorcycles like dirt bikes are considered to be off highway vehicles (OHVs), and are not street legal unless you add specific features, including headlights, tail lights and turn signals. Some states require dirt bike insurance by law while others do not. Even if your state does not, purchasing dirt bike insurance is a good idea to protect yourself and others while you’re hitting the trails.
Types of coverage you should consider include:
- Collision – covers structural damage to your vehicle
- Medical payment – covers medical payments for you or others riding with you
- Bodily injury liability – covers injuries to others
- Property damage liability – pays for damages you’re responsible for
- Roadside assistance – covers towing services if you’re broken down
- Theft – protects you in the event your motorcycle is stolen
Golf Carts
Golf carts are more than just an easy way to get across the green! They are also a great way to travel within gated and retirement communities or even small towns. Similar to motorcycle insurance, golf cart insurance also varies state-to-state. Whether you drive your golf cart on the road or not, there are some protections you’ll want to have. Bodily injury, property damage liability, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured motorist are likely coverages you’ve considered. Depending on upgrades or customizations you have on your golf cart, you may also want to consider accessory coverage.
Does your homeowners or auto insurance cover golf carts if you strictly drive off-road?
Whether your golf cart is covered under your homeowners or auto insurance is defined in a very narrow scope. These policies may or may not cover certain types of claims or claims under certain circumstances. It is important to review your coverage needs with your agent.
ATV’s and UTV’s
Insurance to protect all-terrain vehicles (ATV) and utility task vehicles (UTV) is separate from your home and auto insurance and coverage needs vary by state. ATV and UTV coverages commonly include bodily injury, property damage liability, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured motorist. Your basic ATV or UTV policy may not provide you with enough protection, so there are supplemental coverages you could add to ensure you are protected.
- Medical payments coverage – covers medical payments for injuries you sustain or your passengers sustain
- OEM coverage – original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts for your ATV or UTV if it needs repairs
- Trailer coverage – protects your towing trailer
- Equipment coverage – pays for damage, repair, or replacement of your ATV’s equipment if you purchased both collision coverage and comprehensive coverage already
- Trip interruption coverage – covers food and lodging if you get stranded somewhere
- Roadside assistance – pays for a tow of your ATV if it breaks down 100 feet or less from the main road
